There is a season when the hill stations belong to the people who live in them. The mall road is walkable. The guesthouse has a room that looks at trees instead of a weekend. The mist is not a backdrop for a reel; it is the weather. If you can take leave in the months the brochures forget, take it then.

Mussoorie, Landour, Kasauli, Ranikhet, a ridge above Nainital whose name you will not need. The point is not which hill. The point is arriving without a list of viewpoints. Book a room with a kettle and a window. Walk in the morning before the day has an opinion. Eat whatever the house is already cooking. Come back before dark because dark in the hills is a fact, not an aesthetic.

How to stay

Three nights is the minimum for the nervous system to notice it has left the plains. Five is better. Do not change hotels. The repetition is the luxury: the same chair, the same tea, the same stretch of road until it is a path. If you need a destination for a day, make it a walk to a cemetery, a bakery, a ridge that does not have a café. Sit. Return the long way.

Go when the town has nothing to sell you. That is when it will let you stay.

Off-season is a quality of attention, whether the water is a lake or a sea.

Pack a jumper you trust, shoes that have already been walked in, a book you will not finish. Do not pack a new hiking personality. The hills in August or January will be damp, or cold, or both. That is the deal. Ask the person at the desk where they walk. Go there. Leave the drone in the city.

What you bring back

Not a photograph of a famous bend. A slower first hour for a week after you return. A reminder that a town can close at nine and still be a complete place. If you must bring an object, let it be tea from the shop that was open on a Tuesday. The rest of the souvenir is the walk you will take at home, without a destination, because the hills taught you that going out was the whole trip.
